An abstract painting by artist Sean Garrison created in downtown Minneapolis on the day Derek Chauvin was convicted of murder in the death of George Floyd, arrives at virtual auction Wednesday. “Walking on Air” will be sold by Revere Auctions, based in Saint Paul, Minnesota, with a starting offer of $ 150,000 starting at 10 am on September 22.

In April, Garrison was featured on MSNBC’s “All in with Chris Hayes”. In the segment, Garrison was interviewed about the work when it premiered, just before and after Chauvin’s conviction was announced. “If Sean sells this painting, I would love to buy it,” Hayes said at the end of the segment. “This interview really made this day in so many ways.”

Garrison, originally from Detroit, moved to Minneapolis as a child. He is currently Artist in Residence at the Minnesota African American Cultural Heritage Museum, where he has participated in several public art projects, including murals and an open-air exhibition full of art in response to the death of George Floyd.

Garrison knew he must have been in downtown Minneapolis when the decision regarding Chauvin’s trial was announced. He wanted to be there painting, he said, and expected to be surrounded by anger, rubber bullets and tear gas. “I had my gas mask on and my plan was to walk down the middle of Hennepin Avenue and paint what I was feeling,” Garrison says. “It turned out to be a positive thing. When the verdict was read, I just fed off how I felt about the locals. ”

Garrison is hoping to see big with the auction, especially after the attention the painting has received. In addition to the segment on “All in With Chris Hayes,” he was invited to the Cowles Center in Minneapolis to give a live talk on the creation of the work. “Between that auction and the ancillaries, I’m going to get ten million of that,” says Garrison. “Everyone thinks I’m crazy, but I claim that number in the universe. With ten million I can go to North Minneapolis and make the change. And for me that’s what it’s all about
