STOREY GALLERY NEWS : ARCHIVES AND PLANS - The Past and the Future |
|
Plans
Now that we are no longer organising exhibitions, or using the fine gallery spaces in The Storey, we are changing the way we work, and planning a different type of visual art programme for the Lancaster district.
We intend to deliver a series of projects about Castle Ward, the electoral area in which we are based. The first is planned to be about land ownership, focussing on a site called Freeman’s Wood.
If you are interested in contributing, please get in touch.

The gallery
Lancaster City Council and NICE bar are now organising exhibitions in the gallery.
In this situation, we wish to clarify that "Storey Gallery" is the name of our organisation and not of the venue, so we are pleased that the space is now being called "The Gallery at The Storey".

Storey Gallery archives
Archives
We want to create a clear record of the work we have done to date, so we are sorting out our archives of the past 21 years.
It’s a much bigger task than we anticipated, so we have been fortunate to have the assistance of a graduate placement, Eri Iwanaka. She has compiled a list of our many exhibitions and other activities, and has added a lot of information to our website.
It's not finished, but do have a look.

Two Films
Eri has also been sorting out all our image and video files. Here are two short videos.

DooDah on Granada Reports
DooDah on Granada Reports
A video clip which we found from 2006, is a TV news item about the installation DooDah by Carl von Weiler.
The quality of the original recording on video tape was poor, but the short clip provides a classic example of the way in which contemporary art is presented by the British media.

Dancing with Office Chairs
Dancing with Office Chairs
The second video is a new film of a dance performance which we commissioned during the exhibition, "A Century of Chairs", in collaboration with two other Lancaster arts companies, Ludus Dance and Live@LICA.
The performance took place at various locations around Lancaster city centre, including the foyer of The Storey.

The Tasting Garden
Storey Gardens
We are delighted that a "Friends of the Storey Gardens" group has just been formed, with the aim to preserve and enhance The Storey Gardens for the benefit of the community.
We hope that this will provide the opportunity for restoration of The Tasting Garden by Mark Dion which was vandalised several years ago.
The next meeting of the Friends is at 6pm on Tuesday 26 March in The Storey. Further details from the Chair, Annie Watson, on [email protected]
